"The Postwar History of Wrocław" – Guided tour of the exibition "Wrocław 1945-2016"

A guided tour of the main exhibition “Wrocław 1945–2016” is not only the most popular offering at the Zajezdnia History Center—it is, above all, an in-depth journey through the city’s history that leaves a lasting impression on visitors. It is a story that does not shy away from difficult questions and unexpected answers.

During the tour, participants will learn, among other things:
• who actually made up Wrocław’s postwar community and whether popular notions of the dominance of people from the Eastern Borderlands are confirmed by historical sources,
• why the city’s reconstruction took years and what architectural and social challenges were involved,
• what role Wrocław played in the events of August 1980,
• which postwar event proved to be a turning point for the city’s identity.

Although the starting point is Wrocław’s postwar history, the narrative extends far beyond the local context. To understand the transformation of the German city of Breslau into the Polish city of Wrocław, one must consider the broader context of World War II, shifting borders, political decisions, the realities of the Polish People’s Republic, and the birth of a modern urban community.

“Wrocław 1945–2016” is a space designed so that visitors can not only view history but truly experience it. Multimedia installations, scenic arrangements, archival photographs, recordings, and everyday objects come together to tell a cohesive story of a city that was able to rise from the ashes and redefine its identity.
